OLYMPIA—The League of Education Voters and the Washington state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers are endorsing Rep. Dawn Morrell in her bid for re-election to the state House of Representatives.
Morrell has championed improved state support for schools and education since she first became a representative for the 25th District in 2003. Just last month Morrell was named “Pierce County Legislator of the Year” by the Pierce County Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators.
“Having the support of the American Federation of Teachers and the League of Education Voters means a lot to me,” said Morrell. “They’re not just endorsing me because I say I support good schools. They’re endorsing me because they’ve looked at the record and seen my votes and my work for schools, so this truly is an honor.”
Morrell earned the League of Education Voters endorsement for being a legislator who has “taken a leadership role on education and children's issues in Olympia.”
As a state Representative, Morrell has championed support for education at all levels, including:
Smaller class sizes
Improved state funding for schools and teachers.
All-day Kindergarten and early childhood education.
Affordable college opportunities at Pierce College at Puyallup, U.W. Tacoma and other centers of higher education in Washington.
The League of Education Voters has been a leading independent voice for kids and education in Washington since it was founded in 2001. Leaders associated with the founding of the League wrote and led passage of Washington’s Initiative 728 to reduce class sizes and increase learning opportunities like preschool and all-day kindergarten for students, which are priorities that Morrell strongly supports as a lawmaker.
AFT Washington is a state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO. It represents thousands of members, including faculty from community and technical colleges and pre-K through 12 classified employees.
“The teachers, staff and faculty that we represent trust that you will continue to advocate for them and their students as we face today's challenges,” said AFT Washington President Sandra Schroeder when announcing the endorsement of Morrell.
“I appreciate the important endorsement of these leaders for education,” Morrell said. “Our kids deserve the best schools and the best opportunities, and that can’t happen unless our state lives up to its paramount duty of providing a good education for children.”
